Book Review: For One More Day by Mitch Albom

I’ve taken quite a long rest from reading and I’ve been searching for a good read. I had this talk with a friend and she let me borrow her copy of Mitch Albom’s “For One More Day”. I’ve been a fan of Mitch Albom after reading his “Tuesdays with Morrie” and “The Five People you meet in Heaven”. His works are easy to read and the best of it all, readers can easily relate to the context of his book.

“For One More Day” tells the story of Charley “Chick” Benetto and how his life went to the downside. He’s an alocholic, his wife and only daughter cut off their communication with him, he wasn’t invited to his only daughter’s wedding and he tried (but failed) several times to commit suicide. His suicide plan was to return to his original home, Pepperville Beach, and commit suicide there. On his last attempt, he was again unsuccessful (or so he thought) and as he staggers, all bloody and broken, back to his old home he found his mother there. The thing is, she passed away 8 years ago. The book gives the reader thoughts on what would you do if you were given another chance to meet someone whom you consider to have a very important stand in your life.

On being an Arashian

arashi

I really am against all forms of fandom since I thought it'll completely take up most of my free time and in some way, it'll be like a waste of time. Spending most of your time online, chatting with people whom you don't even know and in exchange for what? Nothing…

And everything changed when I became an Arashian.

"Arashian" is a term Arashi fans used to call themselves. ARASHI is a 5-member boy band group from Japan who appears on almost all media available. Truth to be told, I can say they're not only famous in Japan but internationally as well. I've been an Arashian (Arashi fan) for almost 4 years and I'm still an active fan. It's been some time and I last saw this post from Huxley via Vox but since Vox is now placed in a permanent downtime state, let me share this post with you guys.

The very next day a cute guy is delivered to her door and as she noticed, whatever physical attributes and/or requirements she entered into the site is possessed by the guy. The guy finally woke up and he wants to be her boyfriend! The cute guy happened to be sweet, smart, a great cook and he looks like a million bucks, which is what he's going to cost Riiko if she doesn't return him in the allotted time...

Drama Review: Dragon Zakura

dragonzakura-cover2
Cast:
Abe Hiroshi, Yamashita Tomohisa, Nagasawa Masami, Koike Teppei, Aragaki Yui, Nakao Akiyoshi, Saeko

Summary:
Dragon Zakura is a series which concentrated on school themed dramas. Main person here is Sakuragi Kenji(Abe Hiroshi), a former motorcycle gang (but a certain teacher kept insisting he's from a gangster) turned lawyer. He was called to a certain high school to answer the school's problem in bankruptcy, primarily caused by the head director's impulsive shopping habit. He then boldly claimed that he will produce five students who can get into Toudai (Tokyo University; One of Japan's top University). The thing is, the school is known to house the most stupid, idiotic and lazy students ever found in Japan. Most of the students have an average score of 36.

The show revolves around Kamiyama Satoru (Sakurai Sho), Honma Toshio (Yokoyama Yu) and the rest of the trivia show's staff. The contestants are chosen beforehand by a guide (Sasai Eisuke) who informally hands out the game's invitation and acceptance will entirely be on the contestant's choice. "The Quiz Show" is actually a trivia game show wherein the contestants are to give seven correct answers to win 10million yen. However, the show also has a final question which is called"Dream Chance" and if the question is answered correctly, the contestant will have their wish, whatever it is, granted by the TV Network. It was Honma Toshio, the show's director, who tended to his needs and forces him to remember what happened to him in the past.

The House 1 & 2: Halloween's Website to See

Link: http://sinthaistudio.com/thehouse/

This happens to be one of my favorite site to visit whenever Halloween’s just around the corner.

“The House” was originally made way back in 2005 and in 2010, the same developer created "The House 2" is some sort of a flash game wherein you have to click on certain items to walk through the house. Once inside, you will be shown on different rooms. Each rooms holds a certain story for you to know and images of... Um... Things... As per the site, "THE HOUSE"was built in 1970 and was deserted some time after that but no one has entered the house since the entire family committed suicide due to reasons unknown.

As I was saying, the site was primarily made to scare people. It was like a small horror movie but with user interaction. Personally,I would rate the site a 10 for the coolness of the flash animations. The story is really simple and I'll leave it for you guys to find out. In order to move from one room to another, keep hovering the mouse pointer over various things until the cursor changes from normal cursor to link cursor. Click on the image as long as it is clickable. In short, click on anything that can be clicked! Point-and-click your way through the house to unfold the mystery of what really happened to that fateful fictitious family.

Best viewed alone, late at night, in the dark, and with the sound turned up.

Click on the link and experience the thrill I had as I went through the site. It's kinda scary for me with all the sound effects added to the eeriness of the site. Check it out and let me know what you think about it!

S
ynopsis:
When the orchestra in which he plays cello disbands, Daigo KOBAYASHI (Masahiro Motoki) abandons a career in music, and moves with his wife Mika (Ryoko Hirosue) to his home town in the north-eastern prefecture of Yamagata. He finds a ‘help wanted’ advertisement that seems to offer good terms for work with what he assumes is a travel agency, and goes for an interview in an office with new coffins lining the back wall. The company owner, Sasaki (Tsutomu Yamazaki), hires him with no more than a glance at Daigo’s résumé, at which point Daigo asks what exactly the company does and is told the work involves the ceremonial ‘encoffinating’ of corpses prior to cremation. He is reluctant, but Sasaki urges him to take the job and he accepts, telling Mika the work involves ‘ceremonies’. In this way he begins to travel around Hirano, in Yamagata, with Sasaki. A beautiful suicide victim who turns out to be a cross-dressing boy; a tearaway teenager dead in a motorcycle accident, an elderly grandmother who admired the baggy white socks favored by her grand-daughters with their high-school uniforms: Daigo encounters death in various forms and, although he is uncertain at first, begins to understand this work of ‘encoffination’ and somehow a respect for life as well. Mika, though, finds out exactly what sort of ‘ceremony’ the work involves. Appalled, she demands that he quit, and when he refuses, leaves for her family home back in Tokyo. He becomes alone again since his mother died several years before and his father having deserted the family when Daigo was a boy, but continues to believe in the value of the work he is doing. As winter turns into spring, he begins to feel confident in himself and his new career, but now a series of significant events take place in close succession: Mika returns, the mother of a close childhood friend suddenly dies, and he receives word that the father he has heard nothing from in 30 years has also passed away. As an encoffineer, as husband, as a son, and as a human being: how will Daigo deal with life and death among the people who are dearest to him? A final departure, to a happy farewell…

In line with Philippines-Japan Friendship month, aside from Eiga Sai (in which DEPARTURES is highly recommended by me ^-^), Japan Foundation together with the Embassy of Japan in Manila brings a travelling exhibit here in Manila.

JAPAN: KINGDOM OF CHARACTERS is a travelling exhibition that focuses on characters that fill the world of anime and manga along with how they delved into the daily Japanese life. According to Chuvaness’ entry, the exhibit is divided into 3 sections:

  1. Changes in Japanese society from the 1950’s to the present
  2. Bond that Japanese have with characters (created a reproduction of a high school girl’s room filled with Hello Kitty merchandises)
  3. The Future of Characters” wherein is exhibit looks at the emerging forms of characters. The exhibit also showed a bit on the factor that play a vital role in their future development (new software, cosplays, etc.)

JAPAN: KINGDOM OF CHARACTERS will be open to the public on July 8, 2011 until August 20 at the Tall Galleries, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Monday to Saturday, 9AM to 6PM. The exhibit is also supported by Toshiba (Philippines) Inc.
