I’ve been a movie fanatic and one of the Japanese movies that I really enjoyed watching was “Battle Royale”. With its powerhouse cast and psychology-driven plot (ignoring the gory scenes), this movie ranked as one of my top favorites.
This year, the mighty art players of Sipat Lawin Ensemble collaborated with Australian Playwrights (David Finnigan, Jordan Prosser, Sam Burns-Warr & Georgie McAuley) to take on the challenge of staging the Japanese movie in a play. “Battalia Royale” will run at the CCP Promenade on 7:30PM from February 21-23, 2012. The play will have a live game performance from the novel/movie.

Considered as one of the bloodiest J-Movie I’ve seen “Battle Royale” is something I find interesting. At first, my friends kept bugging me to watch it since it’s a good film. Am I glad that I let myself be bugged! I did end up watching it and I ranked it as one of my favorite films yet. To those who are unaware of “Battle Royale”, the film is about a class who was sent for a supposed to be “study trip” but was eventually sent to an isolated island. There, they are forced to join a program called “Battle Royale” wherein there should only be one SOLE winner. Meaning, the students should think of ways to kill their classmates (no rules) in order to win. It’s either “you win and live” or “lose and be killed”. Additional movie information can be found HERE (WIKI). Trailer HERE (YOUTUBE).
It’s a good thing that my friend invited me to watch the play! I ‘m very excited to watch this and based from reviews, it’s a great watch! “Kuya Bodjie” will participate in the play as the class adviser and head game master. I also read that Teresa Barrozo (Zombadings 1, Shake Rattle and Roll 13: Rain, Rain Go Away, Kinatay) and Radioactive Sago Project will do the play’s sounds and music.
Base from the reviews I’ve read, the audience totally enjoyed the play. I think the scenes are prepared in a “per station” basis since the troupe will be performing outside of CCP. Think of an open air stage play everyone!
Again, to those who are interested to watch: February 21-23, 2012; 7:30 PM; CCP Promenade); Performance is open to public; Pay-what-you-can rates. Hope to see you guys there!
